Melusine: Symbol of the Instinctual and Transformative Power of the Anima

Melusine is a female figure from the folklore of Europe. Her lower body is a serpent or fish, reminiscent of a lamia or mermaid. Occasionally, she is also depicted with wings, dual tails, or a combination of these features. She is said to be a mysterious enchantress. On the symbolic level, she is a beacon guiding us to embrace our instinctual nature.

Dragon: Guardian of the Innermost Treasure of the Self

In my journey of self-discovery and understanding, I’ve been fascinated by the symbol of the dragon, a powerful representation of feelings and emotions. This enigmatic creature, often portrayed as guarding the hidden treasures of the psyche, symbolizes the unexpressed emotions, unmet needs, and suppressed desires that reside in the inner world of the mind. Carl Jung eloquently describes the psyche as the realm where “the dragon stands as the guardian of the treasure” (CW 9i, para. 283). The treasure, in this case, is the realization of the non-dual Self.

Serpents: Symbol of Life Energy and Instinct


The snake is a symbol of life energy and our deepest instincts. This symbol, steeped in historical and cultural significance, resonates with the very substratum of our being, aligning with Carl Jung’s interpretation of the ‘psychic substratum’. According to Jung, this substratum represents the foundation of consciousness, encompassing the realms of the unconscious (Jung, CW 9i, para. 282). The snake is therefor a symbol which connects us the the non-dual subsratum.
